RE: The dumbing down of todays new ute riders.

Now for engine braking. It is a great feture to have but I would like it much better if I could turn it on and off at will. It can be an inconveinance at times such as when you are going down a dried up creek bed with nothing but boulders and rocks. Speed is not an option for this type of riding. With automatic engine breaking, it is like driving a tractor. Real jerky and you don't have the use of manual clutch.

You can have it all. I don't miss that &hit one bit. I grew up in upstate New York about 40 miles north of Albany. I remember 1 Christmas day it was 30 below. I will never, ever, ever, ever live in that &hit again. Good luck and stay warm.

RE: Trail etiquette.

What's your story CC?
This happened maybe the second time I ever rode. I was out riding with NHKINGQUAD. Being the experienced rider, he was leading the way down a trail. It was about 20 degrees out, and winter was just starting to rear is ugly head. There had been about 10 days of solid rain just prior to this, and normally dry trails were littered with pools of ice/slush/water up to 2 feet deep. We would ride at a good pace between these hazards, then creep through them so as to avoid getting soaked. Did I mention it was 20 degrees out? Anyhow, as we were coming down a hill into a pretty large water hole, some guy flies up next to NHKINGQUAD doing 30-40mph and hits the water next to him. This created a wall of water that seemed to be about 8 feet high...until it landed on NHKING. I give the guy credit. If some dude had done that to me, I'd have hunted him down and gutted him, but he kept his cool, despite being soaked head to toe with a semi frozen mix of water and swamp muck.
Some people have no sense of decency.
I also hate it when you are riding on the trail fairly agressively, and the guy following you is so close, that one wrong move would make him part of your rear suspension. Its especially dosconcerting if you know their brakes aren't the best, or if you know they're not a very good rider. I have one buddy that I snapped at for just this reason. I told him I shouldn't be able to hear his motor better than I can hear my own. If they want me to lead the way, cuz I know the trails, then they'd better give me some room.
That would really suck getting hit with ice cold water. I would be extremly pissed. When I am riding and come up on a mud or water hole I slow way down to a crawl because I like to stay somewhat clean when I am out riding. About the only thing that has happened to me is when your in a wide open area going like hell and one of the riders with you cuts right in front of you forcing you to hit the breaks. WTF, all the room in the world and you cut right in front of me at high speed. I hear you loud an clear on the tailgaters. That's why I bought an 800. Now all I see behind me is dust.

RE: The dumbing down of todays new ute riders.

Nice post Chris, I agree with some of your rant but not all of it. My opinion is this, If you know how to ride you can compensate for the things you don't really care for about the machine. There is no such thing as the perfect machine. Everyone has there own style and after a few minutes on a machine you can feel right at home if you are open minded.
SPORTSMAN4X4, I have see you ride, and you know what you are doing, but theres a big difference between riding an ATV and just letting one take you for a ride. I am a big proponent of total control on an ATV or any other form of powersports device, even if it gives you one more thing to do when riding. I ride a quad with a CVT. While its not bad, i prefeered the idea of being able to override the automation in the auto transmission on one of my former rides...the Rincon. I loved the fact it could be shifted manually at the push of one of two buttons. I have nothing agains things automatic, but I wish such things could be manually overridden. I also agree nobody makes the perfect machine. You make a valid point there. Again, the one single "feature" that scares me most is single lever braking. Separate conrol of front and rear barake is essential IMHO. Someone who learned with the single lever system could quickly find trouble if they had to ride a machine with segregated brake controls in highly technical scenarios. This thread is about :features" that actually keep a rider from learning the skills neccesary to ride an all-manual machine. How many people have you known that have found themselves incapable of going somewhere in a vehicle cuz they're 40 years old, and never bothered to learn how a manual transmission with a clutch works? I have witness people flipping a machine over backwards cuz they couldn't make a hill, and they couldn't engage the front brake only when trying to back down the steep incline.
Certainly an experienced, skilled rider has a much better chance at success in said situations, but if they learned at the "ATVing for Dummies" school, they could easily find themselves in a very bad way,
I see your point Chris. My Outlaw has front and rear brakes independet. To your point of not making the hill and having to back down with front brakes only, I have been upside down with my Outlaw with this scanario of just using front brakes on very steep hill. I didn't make it all the way up becuase I had to stop almost at the top because the rider in front of me slowed down so much. I should have waited untill he got over the top before I started up but back to my point, when you are on such a step incline, stoped and trying to back down, here is what hapens, I have the scars to proff it. While holding the front brakes only, I was sliding backwards real fast, then I was sliding sideways real fast, then I was upside down real fast. No matter how hard you try to keep control by using front brakes only, you have no control because the front end is so light the tires just skid and your screwed. Now same scanario with my sportsman which has single brake lever I probaly would have been able to back down the hill. I have done it before &hiting bricks all the way down but I made it. You have to go very, very, very slow. You are just inching your way down by gently letting up on the brake lever just enough to let the wheels turn a litlle at a time while you are leaning over the bars. But I do see your point about new ridders learning to ride and I agree with you point of shifting any time you want. By the way, thanks for the compliment. When is TTP going out to ride with you? I want to see a full ride report on that one.

RE: Fuggin cancer..

Sorry to hear about that Theman. I am going to be dealing with putting my golden retreiver down in the very near future. It will be the worst day of my life. He is 15 years old. He has been every where with me. From boats in the lake to motor homes at the dunes. He has bad hips, he has a tumor on his arse the size of a silver dollar that is always gross looking and it is always like an open sore, he is constantly licking himself to the point where he is bald in some places, he throws up quite offten. It just kills me to know I am going to have to put him down. I am trying to prolong it because I would prefer for him to have a natural death instead of me haveing to take his life. I will not let him suffer. If he gets any worse I will have to take the nessasary step.

Wish I could make it Chris. Sounds like a fun ride. I was at Glamis for Holloween. Had a blast. People everywhere. I never seen so many people there all at one time. Had so much fun with the rail I didn't even ride my Outlaw. TTP better bring some warm clothes. He is going to freeze his arse off.

RE: My new toy

You have the eye's of a hawk CC. No front breaks. The front is so light I can pick it up with one hand. That is why the fuel tank is up front, for more weight. It does not want to stop very fast either. This think has plenty of power to go up any hill at Glamis but I am worried about going over backwards. I might have to make some kind of wheelie bar.

RE: My new toy

I bought this rail 2 weeks ago and it did not run good at all. I determined the heads were leaking compression. I pulled them off and put on new heads, dual port, 44mm intakes with dual valve springs, 94 bore. Got her all put together and fired it up. Holly $hit this thing roars. I got her running perfect. Took it for a spin around the block and went around a curve in second gear, got on the throttle a little bit and went into a slide right now. Wow, this thing has got some balls. I almost hit a parked car. So back to the garage to tinker with it some more. I determined it was not charging. I traced it down to the exciter wire up in the control panel, was not hooked up to anything. Once I put 12 volts to that wire it started charging real good so I decided to hook it up to the cold side of the on, off toggle switch for the ignition. It worked fine untill I tried to shut it off. The car would stay running because the alternator was putting power back through the wire energizing the ignition. Now I am thinking I need some kind of diode or something, then I got out a service manual for vw's and looked at a wireing diagram that looked just like the system that I have. The only thing different was the exciter wire had an idiot light for the alternator inline with that wire. I hooked it up just like the scematic by using my 12 volt test light as the idiot light and it worked fine. When I turn the ignition switch on the light would come on. When I start the engine the light would go out. Perfect, one more thing fixed. I got a bunch of receipts with it that the original owner had for it but I am the third owner. This thing has been bored out to 2275, has high performance cam, high perfomance rockers, dual weber carbs, stroker crank, and some other things. I never did much with high perfomance stuff so any light you can shed on this machine would be greatly apprecitated. All I can say is it runs great and I never had an idea a vw could have this much power. Now here is my questions. What should I use for motor oil?
What should I use for tranny grease? This tranny has had alot of work done to it too. It has had gears welded (what ever that does for it, I don't know) and it has racing axles.

RE: My new toy

Take this response for what its worth. I am NOT and expert nor have much experience with air cooled V-dub engines but I have done both of our early 70's Porsches which are of a very similar design and configuration so take my response with a grain of salt and consult some VW experts as I could be totally off base. You are correct that motor does not use a traditional head gasket it uses copper shims that do the sealing (like the fire ring) and adjusts the deck height. Your problem is that someone has ran the engine long enough that it has damaged the sealing surface. In one word yes it could be repaired but it would be very labor intensive and not a do it yourself job because of the intricate welding and machining. Unfortunately I believe your only option is a new head. Complete assembled stock heads are pretty cheap (bout $300) although if you have some type of aftermarket head (up to $1500)you will have to figure out what you have and buy THAT head. Good thing though is the aftermarket is healthy with parts so it should not be too difficult to source your parts. I hope this helps but I would cruise some VW dedicated forums as I don't know how accurate my information is without spending some considerable research time.
Thanks, I just called a sandrail shop here in town and they have a new head for $179.00. I am going to go get one.

My new toy

This thing has been bored out to 2275 or 2276, not sure. Has all the good stuff like extra oil sump, oil cooler, turning breaks, racing heads and a whole lot of other stuff. I thought it had a blown head gasket so I pulled the head off that was leaking and much to my surprise, there is no head gasket. Metal to metal. Maybe thats how these vw racing heads are. I don't know. Below is a pic. There is a hole burnt in the left side down at the bottom. Can this be repaired or do I need to buy a new head? Any of you out there with experiance with all this high perfomrance stuff, I would appreciate any good advice because I don't no nothing about all the high perfomance stuff and mods. All I know is, this is going to be really cool when I get it running.
